Frequently asked Questions
Welcome to Crystal Clear Ancient Thai Massage. We are dedicated to providing an authentic, transformative experience rooted in centuries-old Thai healing traditions. Below, we answer the most common questions to help you prepare for your journey to balance and wellness.
About Our Practice & Philosophy
What makes "Ancient Thai Massage" different from other types of massage?
A: Ancient Thai Massage, or Nuad Boran, is a holistic healing art with over 2,500 years of history. Unlike Western massage that works primarily on muscles with oils on a table, our practice is performed on a mat on the floor. The therapist uses their hands, elbows, knees, and feet in a rhythmic, dance-like sequence to apply acupressure, assisted yoga-like stretches, and energy line work (Sen Sib). The goal is not just to relax muscles, but to release blockages, restore energy flow, and bring the entire body into balance—physically, energetically, and mentally.
What is the "Crystal Clear" difference?
A: "Crystal Clear" represents our dual commitment: Clarity in Technique and Clarity in Energy.
· Clarity in Technique: Our masters are trained in the authentic Northern (Lanna) or Royal Thai traditions. We avoid diluted, hybrid styles to offer you the true, profound benefits of the ancient art.
· Clarity in Energy: Our space is meticulously maintained for serenity and positive energy. We may incorporate gentle elements like crystal singing bowls or select aromatherapy to clear the space and deepen your meditative state, aligning perfectly with the massage's spiritual roots. This is always optional and discussed with you first.
Before Your Session
What should I wear for a Thai massage?
A: Comfortable, loose-fitting, stretchy clothing is essential. Think yoga or workout attire (e.g., t-shirts, loose pants, shorts). The therapy involves deep stretching, so you must be able to move freely. We also provide traditional, loose Thai cotton garments for you to change into if you prefer.
Do I need to prepare in any way?
A: We recommend:
· Avoid eating a heavy meal 1-2 hours before your session.
· Stay hydrated by drinking water beforehand.
· Arrive 10-15 minutes early to complete a brief intake form, center yourself, and transition into a calm state of mind.
During Your Session
Do you use oil? Will I be undressed?
A: No. Traditional Ancient Thai Massage is performed fully clothed on a firm mat on the floor. No oils or lotions are used, as the technique relies on friction and leverage through the clothing. This makes it a uniquely accessible and modest treatment.

"I've never had a Thai massage before. What should I expect?"
"Welcome! It's a wonderfully unique experience. Think of it as passive yoga or assisted stretching combined with acupressure. You'll remain fully clothed on a comfortable mat on the floor. Your therapist will gently move you through a series of stretches, using their hands, elbows, and sometimes knees to apply precise pressure along your body's energy lines. It's interactive—we encourage you to breathe deeply and communicate about pressure. The goal is to release tension, increase flexibility, and create a deep sense of balance. You'll leave feeling both relaxed and energized."
"I'm not flexible at all. Is this for me?"
"Absolutely, yes. In fact, this is one of the most common concerns! Thai massage is designed to meet you exactly where you are. Your therapist will never force a stretch. The beauty of the practice is its gradual, respectful approach to improving your range of motion. Your only job is to relax and breathe; we do the work. Many clients notice improved flexibility after just one session."
"Will it be painful?"
"A great question. The sensation is best described as a 'therapeutic intensity' or a 'good hurt'—like the deep release of a tight muscle or the satisfying stretch in a yoga class. It should not be sharp, unbearable, or cause you to tense up. Your comfort and communication are essential. We will check in with you, and you should always speak up with 'lighter pressure,' 'more pressure,' or 'avoid that spot.' This ensures a safe and effective session tailored just for you."
"I have a bad back/knee/shoulder. Can I still get a massage?"
"First, always consult your doctor or physical therapist for clearance if you have a serious acute injury or medical condition. For chronic issues or general stiffness, Thai massage can be profoundly helpful. Communication is key. Please inform us of any injuries or areas of concern before the session, both on your intake form and verbally to your therapist. They are trained to modify techniques, avoid contraindicated areas, and use alternative pressure to work safely around injuries and promote healing."
"Why do I need to wear clothes? Isn't massage done with oil on a table?"
"That's a perfect way to highlight what makes Thai massage special! Traditional Thai massage is performed fully clothed because the techniques rely on stretching and acupressure along energy lines (Sen lines), not gliding on muscles with oil. The clothing allows for the necessary grip and leverage. We provide loose, comfortable Thai pants and top for you to change into, or you can wear your own stretchy clothing (like yoga attire). This also makes the experience accessible and comfortable for those who prefer not to disrobe."
"I'm pregnant. Is Thai massage safe for me?"
"Congratulations! Thai massage can be wonderfully supportive during pregnancy, but special protocols are crucial. We require a note of clearance from your prenatal care provider after your first trimester. We have specially trained therapists and pregnancy pillows/bolsters to ensure you are fully supported in side-lying positions. Certain stretches and pressure points are carefully avoided. Please let us know your trimester when booking so we can schedule you with the appropriate therapist."
"How will I feel afterward? Will I be sore?"
"Most clients feel immediately lighter, looser, and more energized, with a clear mind. It's common to feel a deep sense of calm. Some people experience mild, temporary soreness (like after a good workout) for 24-48 hours as the body releases deep-seated tension. This is a normal part of the detoxification and adjustment process. Drinking plenty of water after your session is the best way to minimize this and flush out toxins. The long-term benefits of increased flexibility and reduced pain far outweigh this temporary sensation."
"Is it like a deep tissue massage?"
"While both can address muscle tension, they are fundamentally different. Deep tissue typically uses slow, intense strokes with oil on a table to target specific muscular knots. Thai massage is a full-body, rhythmic sequence of stretches and compressions on a mat, working the entire musculoskeletal system and energy lines. It often provides a deeper release for joints and connective tissue and a greater sense of overall mobility. Think of deep tissue as focusing on specific spots, and Thai massage as integrating the whole body."
"What if I need to use the bathroom during the session?"
"Please, never hesitate! Your comfort is our priority. Simply let your therapist know you need a pause. We will step out of the room so you can use the restroom. It's actually encouraged to hydrate before and after, so this is completely normal and expected."
Benefits & Aftercare
What are the main benefits of Ancient Thai Massage?
A: Benefits are profound and multi-layered:
